This page compares eight tools for teams of roughly 3 to 50 people and MSPs. It covers risk registers and risk assessment platforms. Vulnerability scanners, EDR and full enterprise risk suites for banks and insurers are a different job, so they aren't ranked here.

The choice usually comes down to whether you already buy a compliance platform for SOC 2 or ISO 27001, and who will run the tool. If you do buy one, the risk module in that platform is the easy answer. If you don't, a free self-hosted register is the cheapest start, and a dedicated assessment platform suits teams that send questionnaires to departments and vendors. Only two of the eight tools publish a price, so the tables below spell out what each plan includes instead of pretending the rest have one.

On this page

Short answer, picks by situation and compare table

What IT risk management software does and what it doesn't

How we chose these tools

Free and self-hosted risk registers

Compliance platforms with a risk module

IT risk assessment platforms

Which tool fits which team

What IT risk management software costs

Running a quarterly IT risk review

Where service account ownership fits in the risk register

FAQ

IT risk management tools compared

8

have a free edition (SimpleRisk Core, Eramba Community)

2

publish a price (SimpleRisk, Eramba)

2

are risk modules inside compliance automation platforms

4

Short answer, picks by situation and compare table

Best free register you host yourselfSimpleRiskCore is free for unlimited users, with six scoring methods and a mitigation plan per risk. The IT Lead is listed because it handles one narrow job, not because it is a risk register.

Here's how to read the table. SimpleRisk and Eramba are the only tools with prices on the page, and Eramba's are in euros. The other six want a demo or a quote, and the compliance platforms usually price by framework and company size. The scoring column clearly matters: if you can't change the scale, your register simply inherits the vendor's idea of "high".

What IT risk management software does and what it doesn't

The core of this category is the register. A register is a list of technology risks, and each entry has a description, an affected system or asset, an owner, a likelihood and impact score, a treatment decision and a review date. The better tools also generate risks from assessment questionnaires, link each risk to the controls that reduce it and produce reports that an auditor or manager can read.

The category overlaps with three others, and vendors blur the lines on purpose. Here's where they differ:

Compliance automation (Vanta, Drata, Secureframe) proves that controls work and collects evidence for an audit, but risk is just one module among many.

Enterprise risk management covers financial, operational and strategic risk across the whole company. IT is one program inside it.

Vulnerability scanners and EDR find weaknesses and attacks. They feed a register, although they aren't one themselves.

A register needs an inventory to work from. If you haven't got a reliable list of systems yet, start with our guides to IT asset management software and SaaS management software. Admin accounts are a risk class of their own, covered in the privileged access management comparison.

A spreadsheet is a legitimate register One person, a few dozen risks and one reviewer is a spreadsheet job. Buy software when reviews slip, when several people edit the register at once, or when an auditor asks who changed a score and when. That's the point where a spreadsheet really stops being enough.

How we chose these tools

We picked tools a small IT team can run without a risk analyst, and we looked at four things for each: how a risk is scored and who owns it, how treatment is tracked until it's closed, what the price counts and which plan gates the risk features, and what the vendor's own documentation says the tool can't do. Prices and documents were read from vendor pages on October 27, 2026.

Two limits apply. G2, Capterra, TrustRadius and Gartner Peer Insights refused our automated reads for all eight tools, so there are no ratings or review themes on this page, and we won't repeat figures from search snippets. Vendors also describe their own products, so where a claim comes from a marketing page, we say so. No tool vendor paid for a place here, and we don't link to vendor sites.

We left out enterprise suites such as ServiceNow, Archer and MetricStream. They're built for large programs with dedicated administrators, whereas a small team can rarely evaluate them without a sales process.

Free and self-hosted risk registers

SimpleRisk and Eramba give you a working register without a sales call. The price you pay is time, because someone on your team has to host it, update it and answer its questions.

SimpleRisk

SimpleRisk is a risk register you can run yourself for free. The useful extras are paid add-ons.

How a risk is scored and owned. You submit a risk under Risk Management, then Submit Risk. Only the subject is required, and owner, category and affected assets are recommended. The default method is Classic, likelihood times impact on a 5 by 5 matrix based on NIST SP 800-30. The other five are CVSS, DREAD, OWASP, Custom (a 0 to 10 value) and Contributing Risk. Every method produces an inherent score and, after mitigation, a residual score, and dashboards use residual by default.

How treatment is tracked. Plan Mitigation records a planned date, a mitigation owner, a strategy (Mitigate, Accept, Transfer or Avoid), effort and cost, controls and a mitigation percent. The percent lowers the impact side of the score and recalculates residual risk. A user with the Able to Accept Mitigations permission approves or rejects the plan, and a planned date that passes without an update shows as overdue.

What costs money. Core is free with email support only. Each needs a scenario-style title, a GRC contact, a risk originator and a mandatory review date. The Analysis tab links the asset, threats and vulnerabilities and classifies the inherent risk. Scoring is configurable instead of fixed: a single likelihood by impact matrix (the recommended setup) or one likelihood against several impact types, with your own classification values and addition or multiplication as the calculation.

How treatment is tracked. The Treatment tab records what is in place today, links internal controls, policies, exceptions and projects, and classifies again for residual risk. The treatment options are Accept, Avoid, Transfer and Mitigate, with mandatory solutions you set per option, and exceptions are time-bound acceptances. Reviews run on a schedule, ad hoc or on a change: eramba creates the next review record, the GRC contact completes it, and a missed review shows a warning. A control that fails its audit flags every risk that relies on it, which a plain register can't do.

What costs money. Community is free with no user or time limit and covers four of seven use cases: Risk, Compliance, Data Privacy and Incidents. The tools above handle this differently: SimpleRisk requires only a subject, so you can save a risk with no owner, Secureframe blocks completing an assessment until owner, departments and category are filled in, and Eramba requires a GRC contact and a review date on every risk. Whichever tool you pick, make the owner field mandatory by policy, even where the software doesn't force it.

A register entry doesn't need to be long, but every entry needs the same few fields, filled in the same way, as the table below shows.

Field

What to write

Example

Risk statement

Cause, event and consequence in one sentence

An unpatched VPN appliance could be exploited and expose internal systems

System or asset

The thing at risk

VPN gateway

Owner

One named person

Network lead

Inherent score

Likelihood times impact before controls

4 times 5

Treatment

Accept, avoid, transfer or mitigate, with a date

Mitigate by patching, December 15

Residual score

The score expected after treatment

2 times 5

Next review

A date, not "ongoing"

January 12

Where service account ownership fits in the risk register

Unowned service accounts deserve a line in the register: they hold access, nobody's sure why they exist and nobody feels responsible for them. A register records that risk and its treatment. It doesn't produce the evidence that each account has a named owner, who confirmed it and when. That comes from an ownership review, which none of the tools above run.

That is the narrow job of The IT Lead: it imports service accounts from a CSV file, lets you name an owner for each one, emails the owners to confirm or reject ownership and keeps the answers in a review trail. It doesn't scan for vulnerabilities, rotate passwords or change anything in your directory, and it isn't a risk register. If you'd rather learn the method first, our service account ownership matrix and service account audit checklist work in a spreadsheet.

What these tools don't answer

Know who owns every service account, and when it was last reviewed.

The IT Lead imports service accounts from CSV, nominates owners, collects their attestations and keeps a review trail an auditor can follow. SimpleRisk Core is free for unlimited users, and Eramba Community is free with no user or time limit. Both are self-hosted, so someone on your team installs and updates them. SimpleRisk keeps Jira, the API and risk assessments in paid Extras, and Eramba Community covers four of seven use cases.

What is the difference between IT risk management software and compliance automation?

Compliance automation proves that your controls work and collects evidence for an audit such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001. IT risk management software records what could go wrong, scores it, names an owner and tracks the treatment. Platforms such as Vanta, Drata, Secureframe and Hyperproof bundle both, while SimpleRisk, Eramba and Isora GRC center on the risk side.

How do you score an IT risk?

Most tools multiply likelihood by impact on a 5 by 5 scale, as in NIST SP 800-30, and keep an inherent score before controls and a residual score after treatment. SimpleRisk offers six scoring methods, Drata uses a fixed 1 to 5 scale and Eramba lets you define your own classifications. Pick one scale and keep it for every risk.

Do small IT teams need a GRC platform?

Small IT teams don't always need a GRC platform. A spreadsheet with an owner, a score, a treatment and a review date works while one person maintains it. Move to a tool when reviews slip, when several people edit the register or when an auditor wants a history of changes.

How often should an IT risk register be reviewed?

Most organizations review IT risk yearly, according to Drata's help article. For a small team, a quarterly pass over high risks and a yearly full review is a practical split, and every accepted risk needs an expiry date so it comes back for a decision.

Which of these tools publish a price?

SimpleRisk and Eramba are the only tools here that publish a price. SimpleRisk starts free and its paid packages begin at $5,000 per year. Eramba Enterprise is 2,500 EUR per year on-premises or 5,000 EUR as SaaS. The other six want a demo or a quote.

SoftwareBest privileged access management software

SoftwareBest IT asset management software

GuideService account ownership matrix

ChecklistService account audit checklist

Compare 8 IT risk management software tools for small IT teams, from SimpleRisk and Eramba to Vanta and Drata, with prices, scoring and plan limits.

[2

post-151","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-software
["GET
